Life of Pi Summary
Piscine Molitor Patel (Pi) is a sixteen-year-old South Indian boy who lives in Pondicherry where his father runs a zoo. However, due to a government upheaval, their family decided to close the zoo and move to Canada. Pi, his mother, father and brother boarded the Tsimtsum together with their zoo animals.
Unfortunately, the Tsimtsum sank and Pi was the only human who made it onto the lifeboat and survived. The lifeboat also contained a hyena, a zebra, Orange Juice the orangutan and Richard Park the tiger. One day, the hyena kills the zebra and the orangutan but the tiger was able to kill the hyena, leaving only the tiger and Pi on the lifeboat.
Pi was afraid that the tiger might eat him so he kept distance from the animal, but then he realized that he should tame it so that he can assert his authority towards the tiger. Pi succeeded in taming the tiger. In their journey, the two faces many challenges which they miraculously survive.
During a period of severe starvation, Pi and the tiger met a blind Frenchman who is also starving. The man tried to eat Pi but he did not know that there is a tiger on the boat so he ended up being eaten by the tiger.
Then, Pi and the tiger reached a weird island where they were able to eat algae and meerkats to fight their starvation. Pi tried to sleep on the island but he realized that the island emits acid at night, so they decided to leave the island and continue their journey.
Finally, they landed the Mexican beach, buy upon landing, Richard the tiger runs into the jungle which Pi finds hurtful. Pi is found, fed and taken into the hospital.
Two Japanese men asked him why Tsimtsum sank and Pi tells his story but they did not believed him so he replaced the animals in his story by humans. This is how the story of "The Life of Pi" was written.
Pi went to Canada and continued his studies. He eventually married and had kids but up until now he remember Richard Parker the tiger who helped and saved his life on their 227 days journey on the sea.
